PCGS was founded in 1986 by a group of savvy coin professionals led by the visionary David Hall. The group got together because they saw a major need in the marketplace for independently graded coins that collectors (and investors) could rely upon. Until that time, most coins were graded independently by the seller and the buyer was vulnerable to the subjective opinions about the grade and quality when he/she later went to sell.

According to their official statistics, PCGS has graded over 18 million coins with a market value exceeding $19 billion.
