About 2-Cent Pieces
The United States mint produced Two Cent pieces starting with the Act of April 22, 1864. With a copper alloy similar to the cent, the new two-cent piece was a short-lived issue of coinage. The motto (In God We Trust) first appeared on the coin, due mostly to increased religious sentiment during the Civil War. Two varieties of the first year, 1864, were minted, the rare Small Motto and the Large Motto. Popular due to their odd size and relatively short lifespan, these pieces are difficult to find in mint-state grades. At David Lawrence, we carry a regular inventory of the key dates (1864 Small Motto, 1867 Doubled Die Obverse, 1872, etc.) from circulated grades and up. For serious collectors, we also carry higher graded pieces as well.
