About 3-Cent Silver
The Three-Cent Silver series is a rather difficult collection to complete. Minted from 1851 -1873, there were three different designs that were created during this period. The first, from 1851-1853, had no lines bordering the six-pointed star on the obverse or front of the coin. The second, from 1854-1858, displayed two lines, while the third variety from 1859-1873 shows only one line. From 1854 to 1873, the coins also had an olive limb over the III on the reverse or back and a bundle of arrows beneath. The toughest dates in the set are the later issues from 1863-1872 as the mintages were drastically lower. Attainable but difficult, this series is a popular one among more-advanced collectors due to the majestic colors the coins sometimes present and the difficulty to locate nice specimens.
