The American Eagle platinum program started in 1997 as the U.S. Mint's response to create bullion platinum coins for investors of this precious metal. Despite their high intrinsic value, platinum eagles are still quite popular among coin collectors as well and with high grade PCGS and NGC examples seeing strong demand in the marketplace. Nearly all the mintages are quite low.
