About Lincoln Cents

The United States Mint produced the Lincoln Cent starting in 1909, commemorating the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's birth. The designer's initials (VDB) appear on the reverse of a limited number of 1909 issues, until they were removed by the mint. They were eventually restored in 1918 to the obverse near Lincoln's shoulder. The reverse from 1909-1958 consisted of 2 wheat ears surrounding the words One Cent. However, that was traded for an image of the Lincoln Memorial from 1959-2008. The reverse has gone through several different forms since 2009, when the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth was celebrated and the reverse has since displayed several different depictions of Lincoln's life. At David Lawrence, we carry a regular inventory of the key dates (1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922 No D, etc.) from circulated grades and up. For serious collectors, we also carry higher graded pieces as well.
