About Flying Eagle Cents
Flying Eagle cents were the first small cents struck by the U.S. Mint. They are popular for their design and also, usually collected as part of the greater
Indian head cent collection. Issued for just three years, from 1856-1858 and designed by James B. Longacre.
The 1856 cent is the key to the series and is technically considered a pattern issue, although its popularity among collectors has made the coin a
mainstream requirement in all collections. PCGS and NGC originally recognized the 1856's in mint state (MS) and proof (PR) formats, but they both now
insist that all 1856's are Proof strikes. Collectors can still locate these in older MS holders.
