We are truly excited to offer the world-famous Stella four-dollar gold piece in an extremely attractive, affordable choice proof grade. It's been years since we offered one of these exciting collector rarities, mostly because we felt that recent markets had become too heady. Now that levels have evened out a bit, this exciting type coin is ideal for the collector/investor who wants to own what is considered to be among the most desirable of all U.S. issues.
The Stella was generally conceived as a pattern design, but enough of them were struck of the 1879 Flowing Hair design as to be accepted as regular collector issues. The coin offered here is a lovely choice proof with cameo frosted devices. A few minor hairlines are noted throughout. A small mark is noted in the field in front of Liberty's nose and on the reverse at the top right of the star. The obverse mark is all that keeps this coin from the Proof 64 grade in our opinion.
