Hawaii: 1883 12.5 cents NGC/CAC Proof 66 * Star * (KM-4) DLRC #: 312175 Track

A stunning gem proof rarity from the Kingdon of Hawaii. During the mintage year of 1883, Charles Barber designed and the San Francisco Mint struck just 20 proof examples of this odd denomination as trials pieces and/or special presentation purposes. The 12.5-cent issue was never adopted so business strikes do not exist of this issue making the few proofs the only examples known. Compare this rarity to the famous 1894-S dime (24 struck; 11 known; also designed by Charles Barber) and its importance comes into perspective.
These coins are extremely rare today and high grade examples are extremely desirable. There are just 3 coins in the pop report in this grade (2 at PCGS, 1 at NGC. None are cameo). This coin may be the finest, coming in as a Proof 66 * Star * for eye appeal. The obverse is a full cameo. The eye appeal is virtually unimprovable. Snow white centers on the obverse with russet in blue rim toning. The reverse has more toning and matches beautifully.
In January 2009, Heritage sold one of the two PCGS Proof 66 examples for $92,000 (Deb-Ann Collection). A great coin for the specialist. CAC approved for quality and eye appeal.
