1796 $2 1/2 PCGS XF45 (No Stars) DLRC #: 313079 Track
#67 in the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins Book
The 1796 quarter eagle is one of the most famous of all US coin designs. As a first-year, experimental design the missing stars proved problematic because the coins wore too quickly in circulation. Hence, only 963 of these little jewels were struck and very few remain today in a condition that PCGS or NGC can merit grading.
As of this time, there are just 6 coins in XF45 with a handful finer (many resubmissions in AU have inflated the pop reports). This wholesome XF-AU coin is quite solid for the grade and makes a wonderful acquisition for the collector looking for a unique and rare type coin. The reverse has AU details.
As a matter of diagnostic, we note that the letter E in LIBERTY is struck slightly softer than the rest of the letters in LIBERTY and what you are seeing is the fact that there are a few very small adjustment marks at the rim that only affect this letter. On personal examination one hardly notices it, but the closeup image reveals the detail quite nicely. These marks are benign and quite typical for a coin of this era. In fact, it’s amazing there are just these few on the coin.
