1879 $4 PCGS Proof 64 (Flowing Hair) DLRC #: 313692 Track
Stunning High Grade Example of this Famous Rarity
Also known as Judd-1635, we offer here nothing less than the world famous Stella -- named for the 5-pointed star on the reverse. Just 425 of these coins were struck, mostly for the purposes of handing out to Congressmen to examine. Minted only in 1879 and 1880 with two hair styles (Flowing and Coiled hair), the 1879 Flowing hair design is most common of the 4. The are fewer than 20 known of each of the other designs making them prohibitive for all but a few collectors.
As far as 1879 Flowing Hair coins go, this piece is truly gorgeous and as nice for the grade as one could typically hope to find. Beautiful sunflower-golden coloring overall with sharp watery mirrors and a faint skin of toning, as well as lightly frosted (cameo'd) devices.
Most collectors of US coins aspire to one day own a Stella and this beautiful example will make an excellent addition to a great collection.
