The Humbert slug $50 gold pieces are an exciting and BIG piece of Americana that dates straight back to the gold rush. The XF40 coin we offer here is a very pleasing example, far nicer than one typically encounters in this grade, as it was spared the rim damage and other harsh treatments that these large coins inflicted on each other as they banged around in stagecoaches on uneven roads. Additionally, the lettered edge variety is much scarcer than the reeded edge coins which were struck as well. PCGS has graded just 4 of these in XF40, compared with 22 of the reeded edge variety. It's been 3 years since an XF40 sold in a major auction (Stacks: 11/07). More recently, in 2008, a PCGS XF45 example brought $48,875 (Stacks). In further testament to this coin's desirability, the Eliasberg PCGS MS63 example of this coin sold at the August 2010 Heritage Auction for an astounding $546,250. Lot #3677.
