1858 was the first year that proof issues were made available to the general public. While over 300 sets were believed to be made of the minor silver coinage, it is estimated that fewer than 25 to 30 pieces of the gold issues were produced. With only 15 to 20 estimated to survive of this issue, this pristine ultra gem is a rare offering. This piece sold previously for nearly $65,000 and over $92,000 in 2009. A rare opportunity for the advanced collector that should garner much interest.
A very scarce and desirable early quarter eagle with beautiful, proof-like fields on the obverse. Gorgeous luster with a light tint of purple around the obverse devices. One of just 3,327 coins struck in the year and most have been harshly cleaned or otherwise lost to numismatics. A great type coin.
