Finding any type of variety or mint error in the $20 Double Eagle series is very unusual, but this early date piece displays a clearly repunched date and is quite nice for the grade. Nice luster and a pretty light orange-tinted gold patina, this piece is sure to please the variety collector or the $20 specialist.
Exciting double eagle gold coin from the famous SS Central America shipwreck. One of the few gems that were recovered from the original find from the SS Central America.
The 1863 Double Eagle is a very tough coin from this exciting and highly chased series of type 1 double eagles. In general the Philly-Mint issues struck during the Civil War are scarce to rare, especially in mint state and the 1863 is the toughest.
A particularly tough date from a mintage of 175,000 pieces. Frosty luster with light, prooflike surfaces highlight this underrated issue. With a post-Civil War survival rate of maybe up to 2,000 items, it makes this coin incredibly difficult, especially in mint state grades or nearly so.
