Finding any type of variety or mint error in the $20 Double Eagle series is very unusual, but this early date piece displays a clearly repunched date and is quite nice for the grade. Nice luster and a pretty light orange-tinted gold patina, this piece is sure to please the variety collector or the $20 specialist.
While the San Francisco issues of this popular date were sinking in the Atlantic Ocean aboard the SS Central America, the New Orleans mint produced 30,000 coins for consumption amongst banks. While a limited number survive today, this AU50 example is one of the more attractive pieces in the AU category as it still displays luster around the devices. Typical bag marks can be found throughout for the grade that was likely transported in cloth bags during its life before circulation, but overall this piece is an attractive example that is due consideration amonst serious collectors.
Beautiful example of this scarcer San Francisco Mint Issue Double Eagle with plenty of luster. CAC approved for quality.
