Exciting double eagle gold coin from the famous SS Central America shipwreck. One of the few gems that were recovered from the original find from the SS Central America.
The 1866-S No Motto double eagle is a very rare coin indeed. Struck in the final year of the no-motto design, just 120,000 coins were struck compared to over a million for 1865-S. This example displays beautiful golden-yellow surfaces with plenty of luster.
A particularly tough date from a mintage of 175,000 pieces. Frosty luster with light, prooflike surfaces highlight this underrated issue. With a post-Civil War survival rate of maybe up to 2,000 items, it makes this coin incredibly difficult, especially in mint state grades or nearly so.
