(FS-016) This is the famously rare 1916 double die nickel with strong bold doubling of the date. Especially difficult in higher grades since this variety was not discovered until the 1950s. The example offered here is one of the very nicest circulated coins we've ever handled of this date. It is easily the prettiest of three AU58's we've sold over the years with pastel rose, golds and blues evident. The strike is far superior to the typical example and we believe it to be a very early die state, as the clarity of the doubled-date and horn/hair detail are truly exceptional. The last mint state (PCGS MS62) realized $163,300 (Goldberg, 9/07) and the services have not graded anything in MS60-61, making this lovely coin a great value at around 1/3 of the MS62 price. This is a coin that is highly likely to see appreciation as sophisticated collectors try to fill their set with this key date.
