Item Description:
An extraordinary example of this inexplicable rarity! The first from the San Francisco facility with the motto IN GOLD WE TURST, a mintage of 34,920 1866-S half eagles were produced. Due to the rigors of West Coast commerce during this time just a tiny fraction of the original mintage has survived. The PCGS population, according to CoinFacts, is less than 100 examples across all grades. One of only three known Mint State survivors, the present offering is tied for finest known with one other MS61 example and is the sole finest with CAC approval. Rich, original honey-golden color blends beautifully with orange and rose tints over both lustrous sides. The striking detail is sharp and the surface quality is outstanding for the assigned grade, with no noteworthy marks taking away from the incredible eye appeal. A thrilling piece for the advanced gold specialist!
