The 1861-D is a famous numismatic rarity. Other than the super-rare (and largely uncollectible) 1849-C Open Wreath gold dollar, this is the scarcest coin in the entire series. Serious numismatists and Confederate historians are agreed that the real claim to fame for this issue lies in the fact that it is the only official U.S. coin to be struck under Confederate control. The rebel forces struck approximately 1,000 specimens, but experts believe fewer than 75 coins exist today.
The coin offered here is one of the top known specimens extant. It is one of just 9 coins of this date to be CAC approved in any grade for quality and eye appeal. Public auction records are scant on this issue with a recent record of $57,500 for the only other PCGS AU53 (Stacks: 1/10). This coin is from the Broadus R. Littlejohn Collection of U.S. Coins, sold by Schuyler Rumsey Auctions in February 2010, where it realized $51,780. It has since been awaarded CAC approval. According to our records, no other examples of this date have sold at public auction since 2008. This is a rare opportunity to obtain a major U.S. piece of Confederate history.
This coin appears as #71 in the Top 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, Third Edition by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth.
