Item Description:

The 1796/5 half dime is an important numismatic rarity in any grade above VF, but the desirability goes way up in mint state, as very few high grade examples are known. The coin we offer here is the ONLY MS64 to be graded at PCGS or NGC. It hails from the famous Eliasberg collection which means we can likely trace the back to the late 19th Century. The surfaces are simply amazing and beautiful  with rich, original toning exactly as they appeared in Eliasberg's collection. The reverse shows highlights of rose and green thoughout.

This coin was sold as lot #895 in the Bowers & Merena Auction of the Louis Eliasberg Collection on May 20-22, 1996, where it realized $28,600 as an uncertified coin, conservatively graded as MS61/62 (all the Eliasberg coins were sold uncertified). The cataloger (Q. David Bowers) declares this "present coin is of incredible quality and is not only one of the very finest in existence, but is of great importance with its connection to the 1795 year..." The pedigree of this coin is listed in the catalog as follows: "E.S. Norris Collection; Chapman Brothers, May 17, 1894; J.M. Clapp, Clapp Estate, 1942, to Louis Eliasberg."

This coin has seen a subsequent sale in August 2012 for $74,750 (Stacks-Bowers). The only coin finer is amazing MS66 coin that sold in January 2007 in an NGC holder for $172,500 (Heritage). The same coin subsequently crossed over to PCGS in the same grade and realized $345,000 just a year later (Heritage, 1/08). We feel the coin offered here is in close comparison to that piece and a great value at a fraction of that price.

Note: we have not yet sent this coin to CAC for their review. Also, a photo-copy of the 1996 Eliasberg catalog page can be provided upon request.
