DLRC #: 87833 // PCGS #: 8994
Bright and flashy, with intense luster on both sides. Extremely light friction on the obverse, and none on the reverse. If NGC used the AU-59 grade, this superlative coin would qualify. The Philadelphia mint produced only 2,199 Double Eagles for circulation in 1881 and today, NGC has certified only 15 examples of this date, with four others huddled with this one at the AU-58 level. The only finer example of which we are aware is a single PCGS MS-60.
